As technology advances, newer discoveries are made and many old beliefs are found to have been based on incorrect and insufficient facts. The new generation of researchers keep testing information and even settled facts in the light of newer findings.
For ages counterfeit producers of electronic goods across the world have provided misleading data about the origin of the product and the standards. While these deceptions are economical with the truth, they too are clearly not fake news.
What is then fake news? First, and foremost, fake news is produced or created not merely to give false information. Many a times an honest news reporter can also give wrong information just as a student sometimes ends up giving wrong or false information. However, it is when the false information is given with a purpose that one enters into the domain of fake news.
Fake news requires wilful deception. In an insightful study, Rini Regina also argues that fake news “implies that the deception is intended for an audience larger than the immediate recipient; fake news is meant to be shared and shared again.” It has to be made ‘news at any cost’.
Journalists are in the business of creating coherent narratives from all available information. False or wrong information may often distort a story and hence most people who are in the vocation, try very hard to collect correct information. If wrong information enters the narrative and they get to know, they try and remove the incorrect information from their narrative

The short video application TikTok joins other social networks such as Twitter to help combat fake news . Starting this week, the Chinese-owned company will put warning labels on videos that potentially contain “misinformation” and ask users not to share that content.
This tool will be launched first in the United States and Canada and for the rest of the world at the end of the month. According to a statement , the platform already eliminates videos that contain “disinformation” about COVID-19, but from now on it will expand to topics such as those related to QAnon-type topics.
How will the TikTok tag work?
First, the user will see a banner on the video when the video has been reviewed, but it cannot be fully validated.
The creator of the video will also be notified that their video was flagged as “Unverified Content”.

Donald Trump may have exited the White House but he has left a permanent mark on the English language, with the Macquarie Dictionary labelling ‘fake news’, a term Trump used frequently, the word of the decade.
The Australian dictionary’s senior editor, Victoria Morgan, says it’s a fitting title given the way fake news has evolved over the past few years.

“Fake news is different from making a mistake,” Morgan says. “It’s deliberate misinformation. The first definition stands, but what we have is a second definition where it’s a term used to refer to information that’s viewed as being opposed to or detrimental to someone’s own position. So [fake news] is now being used to attack real news and rob it of its credibility.”
And before you ask, no, it isn’t wrong to call ‘fake news’ a word even though it’s made up of two separate entries in the dictionary.
“Whether it’s two words or three words, it’s a word,” Morgan says. “It’s a compound word.”

Why it matters: Even when platforms try to police this type of content, memes and fake stories often still circulate indefinitely, making it hard for victims to fully recover from the hoax.
Driving the news: Joe Gould, a Congress and Industry reporter for Defense News, tells Axios about how his identity was hacked to fuel a right-wing meme conspiracy that the incoming Defense Secretary planned to outsource U.S. defense systems to China.
- Gould received more than five dozen emails last weekend asking him if a meme that featured an article with his byline on Telegram was really written by him. It wasn’t.

Gould later found that the meme was rapidly spreading on bigger platforms like Facebook. Frantically, he started to search for the meme using key words noted in the fake article and to contact people who posted it to try to get them to take it down.

Researchers at the Universities of Göttingen and Frankfurt and the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, have developed a new approach that can help detect fake news leveraging machine learning methods.
As part of the study published in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, scientists have leveraged machine learning methods to create classification models that can help detect false information.
The model can help identify suspicious messages based on their content and certain linguistic characteristics.
“Here we look at other aspects of the text that makes up the message, such as the comprehensibility of the language and the mood that the text conveys,” said Professor Jan Muntermann from the University of Göttingen as quoted in an official release published in Eureaklert!.
The approach is known in principle. For instance, the spam filters that are used by internet companies to identify spam messages.
The key problem with current methods, according to the researchers was that fraudsters are continuously adapting the content and avoiding certain words that are used to identify fake information to avoid being detected.
In the new approach, researchers combined models with high detection rates and robustness. This is so that fake news can still be detected even if certain suspicious words disappear from the text.
“This puts scammers into a dilemma. They can only avoid detection if they change the mood of the text so that it is negative, for instance,” explained Dr Michael Siering. “But then they would miss their target of inducing investors to buy certain

Researchers at the Universities of Göttingen and Frankfurt and the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana have developed an approach that can recognise such fake news, even when the news contents are repeatedly adapted.
